Following the success of my Jurassic Park design, I knew I wanted to do another movie themed car. This time I was looking for something more challenging, but not too far out of my skill range. Going through my DVD collection, I noticed the cover art for Alien - one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies. This would be the perfect challenge, and would require me to use everything I had learned from my first design while allowing me to try new techniques such as highlights and shading to create an image with the illusion of depth and texture.
One of the first and most difficult decisions in creating the design was choosing which car I wanted to use. I could not settle on a single car, so in the end I adapted the final design to fit three different cars: the 2006 Porsche Cayman S, the 2005 Lamborghini Gallardo, and the 2002 Ferrari Enzo. Now that I had chosen a canvas, it was time to start painting.
With the DVD box art for inspiration, I created the image on the sides of the car using several basic tear vinyls and a standard font. Once I was satisfied with the look of the sides, I began work on the hood. Trying to recreate the alien egg realistically with shading, highlights, and textures was the hardest part, but after a few hours of trial and error and 120 separate layers, the egg was done and the design was complete.
